As the business grows, the proprietor often fails to plan on a smooth transition from the home based venture to a business that now has more persons involved in its daily operations. This is perhaps the main reason why you might consider setting up a local domain from scratch.
The cost of an entry-level server is not too much an expense for one to consider if you want things to run smoothly for the new business. Common mistakes most people make during small business startup include failure to set up a local domain and the use of public email service providers. Registering a simple domain name is a good idea as it gives your business a good platform on the control panel to manage your emails as well. Emails have become an inevitable part of the modern business environment that no business can survive without.
Managing the Transition Seamlessly
If you are smart enough to buy an entry-level server for your new business, you can strategically build a local domain controller and create folders to manage your shared resources right from scratch. Some people use their personal computers and even build their ERP data bases from the same. This can prove a major challenge especially when you mix your personal information with that of the company. This situation gets even more complicated when you start hiring new workers. This is because you might be forced to share folders and databases from your personal computer with your new workers.
If you have company resources such as ERP databases and other shared folders on a local domain, you will not have problems sharing the information you need with new members. A local domain gives you an opportunity to manage rights of access to all users on the local domain. This simply means that you can decide who can access certain databases or even make amends or changes. At times when you may not be in your office, you can still access important resources from your server depending on the choice of operating system you are running. Most server operating systems will give users remote access depending on customized configurations.
Even better is the fact that servers will give you room for expansion of storage space. If you run out of space as your organization grows, you can always increase the storage by buying hard drives with more storage capacity. It is easier to expand storage volume on server without setting them up a fresh as compared to doing the same from laptops and personal desktop computers. Servers are also easier to back up just to safeguard your data against possible loss in case things go wrong locally. A domain controller also lets you know and even track changes made on the system because it documents logs by each user.
